Gus Nwanokwu, the son of a Biafran-Nigerian father and Irish mother, grew up in London, England, during the 1960s and 70s.

Educated in the British state-school system, Nwanokwu earned a joint honors degree in psychology and sociology and a postgraduate certificate in education. He then taught at an inner-city comprehensive school while studying for a master’s degree in education. Nwanokwu has spent most of his career teaching in and managing further education colleges, including an unforgettable year teaching with the League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers program in Kingston, Jamaica.

Nwanokwu married his wife in 1982 and they are still together to this day. They have three children.
